We love seeing our customers’ faces when we tell them their project costs are fully covered by the revenue generated from asset resale and recycling. Here you’ll find out more about how we made a de-install project for BT cost-positive thanks to our customer-tailored business model.

Requirement

We have been working with BT (the UK’s largest provider of fixed-line, broadband and mobile services) for years and we’re incredibly proud to be their partner for sustainable communications networks. For this project, BT required certain parts of their site in Bude, England to be completely decommissioned.

Bude is a cable landing site where the TAT-14 cable lands in the UK from the US. The equipment on site is therefore extremely niche, including equipment for submarine line terminating, power feeds and submarine network protection. BT needed the site’s equipment to be removed safely and cost-effectively. And imperatively, all of the project work had to be carefully planned out in line with COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Solution

We love working with our friends and partners at BT and were over the moon to be chosen for this 6-week project. Before starting the de-installation work, we completed 2 site audits to ensure that all customer requirements were understood. Our solution was not simply to strip out cards and chassis out of racks. We also left a clean footprint after decommissioning the equipment so the customer’s site could be put to another use. In total, we removed over 120 full cabinets.

Arriving on site, our team had a dedicated entry and exit point to limit physical contact with BT employees. Furthermore, we completed the recycling pre-sortation there and then by placing recycling containers on site. This meant we could quickly sort the high value equipment to be recovered by us for resale and recycling, from the scrap metal to be recycled locally. From here, our team removed the cable from overhead cable trays and installed acrow props to take the weight of the cable trays/ceiling as requested by the customer.

We’re always more than happy to attend to our customer’s bespoke requirements, whether it’s site access or when it comes to bringing our own equipment to site. For example, for this project we brought our own forklift on site to handle the extremely heavy cabinets.

As is standard practice for us, good communication with the customer is key. A clear scope of works was agreed in advance of the project commencing, and close contact was maintained with the customer throughout the project. This was beneficial all round, and all the more important because of the COVID-19 social distancing precautions.

Results

From the recovered equipment, approximately 10% of it was kept for resale while the remainder was put through our WEEE recycling process.

The biggest outcome for BT was that the revenue generated from the equipment resale and recycling covered the costs of the work entirely and made them extra money on top, making it a cost-positive project.

What’s great is that the customer not only made monetary savings; thanks to our de-install, there will be significant savings on energy, with redundant equipment no longer being powered unnecessarily. In addition, the newly decommissioned suite where the site was located can be reused by the customer for other projects.
