About the Juniper T1600 Core Router

The Juniper T1600 Core Router was released as part of the T-Series of core network routers by US-based technology company Juniper. Other routers within the T-Series included the T320, T640 and T4000 with the number following the T, representing the throughput capacity of the router in Gbit/S (Gigabits per second). The T1600 is an extensive routing system that caters to the needs of large networks and network applications, particularly those supported by Internet service providers (ISPs).

The Juniper T1600 offers a range of high-speed interfaces, including Gigabit Ethernet, SONET/SDH, and other interfaces. With its capacity to accommodate up to eight Flexible PIC Concentrators (FPCs), each configurable with various network media types, the T1600 router ensures versatility and flexibility in network connectivity. It boasts impressive switching capabilities, delivering up to 800 gigabits per second (Gbps) of full-duplex throughput (1600 Gbps of any-to-any, nonblocking, half-duplex switching).

One of the core features of the T1600 router is its well-designed architecture, which separates control operations from packet forwarding operations, this was a unique feature among the T-series and allowed the router to manage its data throughput more efficiently by eliminating processing and traffic bottlenecks, helping the router to achieve exceptional performance. Control operations within the router are efficiently handled by the host subsystem, which runs the Junos operating system (Junos OS), the standard iOS for all routers in the Juniper range. The host subsystem manages critical functions such as routing protocols, traffic engineering, policy enforcement, monitoring, and configuration management.

Packet forwarding operations are handled separately by the Packet Forwarding Engines, which consist of purpose-built hardware, including Juniper Networks’ designed Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). These ASICs play a vital role in the router’s design, enabling it to achieve data forwarding rates that align with the current capabilities of fibre-optic networks. This combined set of features allowed the T1600 to deliver an impressive forwarding capacity of up to 1600 million packets per second (Mpps).

In 2015 Juniper Networks announced the End of Life of the T-Series of routers, with a recommended upgrade pathway to the PTX-Series Core and MX-Series routers. Despite the OEM no longer offering technical and hardware support for this platform, TXO still offers a repair and refurbishment service for many component parts within the Juniper T-Series of routers as well as many other Juniper networking platforms. Contact us today to find out how we can help you to continue operating your existing Juniper T-Series network.
