About the Cisco 3600 Multiservice Access Router

The Cisco 3600 Series Multiservice Access Routers are a range of high performance routers released by San Francisco based technology company, Cisco. There are several models in the Cisco 3600 series, including the Cisco 3620, the Cisco 3640 and the Cisco 3660, amongst others. The Cisco 3600 series routers are designed to be deployed in small to medium sized businesses, but due to its range of features, it would be equally suitable for roles within internet service providers (ISPs) as well. Capable of supporting a range of network capabilities including high speed video and data transmission, a range of LAN services, dial access, and multiprotocol data routing and more traditional services such as voice/fax network connectivity.

One of the key benefits of the Cisco 3600 series router is that it can support a range of network modules which allow the network operator to configure their system to the individual requirements of the business that the unit is operating in. Depending on the model, the Cisco 3600 series features either two or four module slots which can be fitted with network modules or interface cards that offer dial connectivity, integrated services digital network (ISDN), Primary Rate interface (PRI), integrated digital modems and asynchronous/synchronous serial interfaces. This range of modules allows the Cisco 3600 to provide various LAN-to-LAN and routing applications as well as branch/enterprise dial as well as customer specific applications.

As a multiservice router, the Cisco 3600 series supports both WAN/LAN access through the use of mixed media cards which themselves support various WAN technologies, and high speed ethernet by using a high density fast-ethernet network module. Capable of providing multiprotocol dial access, the Cisco 3600 can connect users of the platform no matter where they are located, each of these users can then have varying levels of access to the network which can be configured based on a set of security features including access lists, Remote Access Dial-In User Service (RADIUS), violation logging, Kerberos, and TACACS+ with authentication authorisation and accounting (AAA). This range of security features means the Cisco 3600 is the perfect routing solution for businesses where security is of the utmost importance.

Alongside the advanced security features the Cisco 3600 series offers a range of management protocols that allow network operators to quickly and easily manage and maintain the network, as well as rapidly identify and fix issues. Using the CiscoWorks graphical user interface (GUI) management tool running in tandem with the CiscoIOS software, network administrators have complete control of their network statistics, security and operating conditions from one central location. This helps reduce the amount of time network engineers need to spend on costly in-house maintenance and reduces the amount of network downtime.

As with many Cisco routers, the Cisco 3600 series has scalability built into the core of the platform. Using a Multichassis Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (MMP), users are able to start with one physical chassis unit which can then be scaled as their business grows by aggregating additional units as necessary. This helps provide a cost-effective way for businesses to increase their bandwidth without the need to replace the entire network.

In December 2003, Cisco announced the end of life of the Cisco 3600 Series Multiservice routers as the 1st of January 2010, after which point they would no longer offer technical or software support for the platform. Cisco recommended users transition to either the Cisco 3700 series or the Cisco 2691 as a suitable upgrade pathway. At TXO, we still offer replacement parts and service existing network equipment for businesses using the Cisco 3600 series to help extend the life of your platform.
