About the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers

The Cisco ASR 9000 series of aggregation services routers (ASRs) is an advanced network routing solution created by American technology company, Cisco. Released in 2008, the ASR 9000 series is designed for service providers and large data centres, and can deliver unmatched performance, scalability, and reliability.

The Cisco ASR 9000 series features models including the 9001, 9006, 9906 and 9922, which all had different configurations depending on the requirements of the business and their speed dependencies. For example, the Cisco ASR 9001 which operates with 2 RU (rack units) can handle up to 240 Gbps, whereas the Cisco ASR 9922 runs 44 RU’s and can handle an immense throughput of up to 160Tbps.

The ASR 9000 series routers include hardware-based forwarding and traffic processing capabilities which allow it to deliver high-performance routing whilst featuring industry-leading bandwidth capabilities. Added to this the Cisco ASR 9000 utilises dynamic routing policies including segment routing and EVPN (Ethernet Virtual Private Networking) to help decrease network congestion with minimal input from operators.

Depending on the model, the ASR 9000 series routers can support up to 400 Gbps per slot, meaning they can handle packet forwarding and routing functions with utmost efficiency. The routers can support up to 36 ports of 100GE or 288 ports of 10GE in a single system, enabling massive data throughput. This makes the Cisco ASR 9000 to be deployed in multiple different scenarios, from remote POP (Point of presence) applications for small market networks, or as a Metro aggregation router.

Despite its incredible packet handling capabilities, the Cisco ASR 9000 employs optimised ASCI’s, which allow it to maintain considerably higher performance, whilst reducing its power consumption by up to 96%. This makes it an ideal platform for businesses that need a high performance edge network whilst minimising the environmental impact of the technology they use.

The ASR 9000 series routers are based on a modular architecture that allows for easy hardware and software upgrades. The system supports a broad range of interfaces, including Ethernet, MPLS, IP, and optical networks. Additionally, the routers support different types of services, such as Layer 2 VPNs, Layer 3 VPNs, multicast, and quality of service (QoS), this array of tools, gives network operators considerable flexibility when designing their network.

The routers also provide a range of resilient features, such as Cisco IOS XR Software, which offers carrier-grade system reliability. This operating system enables the router to deliver continuous system operations with zero downtime, ensuring that users experience consistent network service. The routers also come equipped with high-capacity, hot-swappable power supplies, and fan trays that provide redundancy in case of a failure. All this combined helps make the Cisco ASR 9000 series an incredibly efficient and reliable router.

The Cisco ASR 9000 series also include Optical Transport Network (OTN) support, which allows service providers to deploy ASR 9000 series routers in fibre-optic networks to provide high-speed data transport.

Repair capability for the Cisco 9000 series ASR Routers

As part of the TXO mission to support the circular economy and to help minimise the environmental impact of telecoms across the supply chain, we offer an extensive and comprehensive third-party repair service that focuses on lifecycle management across a wide range of products and components for the Cisco Aggregation Service Router 9000 as well as others from the wider Cisco router family.

Based out of our advanced engineering facilities in Solihull, our team of experienced system engineers have an in-depth knowledge of core telecom repairs including optical, IP and radio based technologies at circuit board level and conduct approximately 12,000 repairs each year. This ensures the businesses we work with can maintain optimum service levels and minimise disruption to their network. At TXO we are able to refurbish and restore many components for the Cisco ASR 9000 as well as procuring replacement parts as necessary.

To help ensure the longevity of the repairs we carry out and the overall life of your Cisco equipment, we will often conduct several pre-emptive repairs as part of the service we offer. By reconditioning and repairing parts that are susceptible to developing faults we can help prevent any future repairs by refurbishing parts before issues develop.

For occasions where minimal downtime is required we also offer an advance replacement service for many used Cisco parts, which allows us to deliver components to you in advance of a repair being carried out, allowing you to ensure that there is minimal disruption to your business.
