Challenge
The failures were exacerbated by limited access to OEM manuals and repair assistance, making it difficult to obtain the necessary spares from stock. As a result, outsourcing the repair to a third party was identified as the quickest option to address these complex faults and issues.
Diagnosis
Upon extensive fault finding, it was discovered that the TX/RX integrated circuits (ICs) on the radio devices had blown out due to exposure to severe weather conditions. These failures had a cascading effect, damaging the multi-layered printed circuit board (PCB) and impairing other functions, such as tracking within the wider device, rendering the equipment unfit for purpose.
Solution
The faulty ICs were scarce and not widely used, making them difficult to source. TXO identified two separate replacements and validated their use in the devices. The new ICs were integrated and underwent thorough soak testing on a Gold reference system (a non-faulty part) to ensure they were fit for purpose, compatible with other components, and able to function within the parameters of the product specifications. Performance was re-tested, and ageing parts were replaced to ensure the longevity of the repair.
Result
The client benefited from a reliable 10-day return on the repaired parts, which were received and ready for future deployment. The repairs were 100% successful, with zero beyond economic repair rate (BER), ensuring that the radio parts were fully functional and dependable for continued use in the network.
